Bio 13.1 Photosynthesis Flashcards
Why do plants need light?
They use energy from the light to make glucose, which stores energy. This energy can b released during the plant’s respiration.
What else do plants use the energy for?
- Growth (increase in biomass)
- Repair and replacement of cells
- Reproduction
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make their food using carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight. It produces glucose and oxygen as a by-product.
What is respiration?
Respiration is the process by which energy is released from glucose and oxygen in living things.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS or RESPIRATION?
CO2 and Water are raw materials.
Photosynthesis
PHOTOSYNTHESIS or RESPIRATION?
Oxygen is taken in.
Respiration
PHOTOSYNTHESIS or RESPIRATION?
An exothermic reaction.
Respiration
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In the chloroplasts; tiny organelles found in the leaf cells.
How is water brought for photosynthesis?
Taken up through the roots and transported by the xylem vessels. Water travels in an upward direction.
How is light energy absorbed for photosynthesis?
It is absorbed by chlorophyll; a green pigment found in chloroplasts.
How does carbon dioxide enter the leaves for photosynthesis?
CO2 enters through tiny pores called stomata, mainly found on the underside of leaves.
How does the sugar/glucose (product of photosynthesis) reach the whole plant?
Glucose travels in phloem tubes around the whole plant.
