Binary Fission Flashcards
What are the three purposes of cell replication?
Growth and development
Maintenance and repair
Reproduction
What is exponential growth?
After each round of replication the number of cells doubles. eg. Binary Fission
What is binary fission?
A procedure that a prokaryotic cell undergoes which produces to genetically identical copies of a cell.
What are the steps of binary fission?
D- DNA Replication: the chromosomes are uncoiled, DNA and plasmids are replicated.
E- Elongation: The cell elongates, preparing to split into two cells and the duplicated chromosomes move to polar ends.
S - Septum Formation: The cell undergoes cytokinesis by pinching in and creating a septum. Plasmids are distributed.
C - Cell Division: - New cell wall and membrane is formed down the centre of the cell, the split apart leaving two genetically identical cells.
