First Amendment
Provides for freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition
Second Amendment
States the need for a militia (now National Guard) and protects the right to keep bear arms ( if not in violation of gun control laws)
Third amendment
Prohibits the military from forcing citizens to provide housing for soldiers
Fourth amendment
Prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures
Fifth amendment
Provides those accused of serious crimes the right to a grand jury; protects against double jeopardy; prohibits the government from depriving people of their property without due process of law.
Sixth amendment
Protects the rights to prompt, public trials by jury; protects the right of the accused to know what charges have been brought and to question witness ; protects the rights to have an attorney
Seventh amendment
( provides the right to a trial by a jury in civil suits)
Eighth amendment
Provides for those accused of a crime to get out of jail on bond until the trial is over ; prohibits cruel and unusual punishment
13 amendment
Abolishes slavery
