What is the 1st Amendment?
Freedom of :
1. Speech (not hurting anyone)
2. Religion
3. Press (can’t ruin careers/be false)
4. Assembly (protest–>peaceful)
5. Petition
What is the second Amendment?
Right to bear arms
What is the 3rd Amendment?
Freedom to NOT have to quarter soldiers (letting them in your homes)
What is the 4th Amendment?
The right to no unreasonable searches and seizures (taking belongings)
What is the 5th Amendment?
Freedom of:
1. Self-incrimination (right to remain silent)
2. Double Jeopardy (can’t be tried for the same crime twice after being proven innocent)
3. Eminent domain (get paid if the gov. takes your land)
4. Grand Jury (if you’re arrested, you are sent to a place where they see if you should have been arrested or not)
5. Due process (fairness in all trials)
The 6th Amendment protects these 4 basic rights of the accused (of crimes)
- Speedy and public trial by jury
- Information on the nature and cause of the charge
- Witnesses at the trial
- Counsel for the defendant
The 7th Amendment
Rights to a jury (the same as 6th Amendment, but for civil cases)
The 8th Amendment guarantees freedom from
Excessive bail and from cruel and unusual punishment
The 9th Amendment guarantees
other rights not specifically mentioned in the Bill of Rights (that aren’t crimes)
The Tenth Amendment reserves
Anything not listed goes to the states
