Big Bang Theory Flashcards
What is a Scientific Theory?
A scientific theory is:
-Not a guess
-It is a plausible explanation for a phenomena
-which is supported by evidence
-and builds upon scientific laws
What is the Big Bang Theory
The LEADING SCIENTIFIC THEORY for the ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE
Based on evidence that was gathered over decades of Observation and Research.
What did the Big Bang Start With?
It started with an infinitely DENSE point. All matter and energy was contained in one point called a SINGULARITY.
When did the beginning take place
13.7 Billion years ago
How is the beginning described?
The matter in the singularity began to expand. This matter cooled and began to quickly move apart. it was not an EXPLOSION BUT AN EXPANSION - like a balloon inflating. The universe expanded rapidly as a whole in all directions
First Particles
Matter was created in the form of tiny particles. What are the names of the particles?
1) Protons
2) Neutrons
3) Electrons
It is too hot for larger particles to form (eg. Atoms and molecules)
How did the first atoms form?
After 300, 000 years the universe is much cooler and atoms start to form.
Particles (300 000 after the big bang) end up forming atom - which atoms where formed at this time?
Hydrogen and Helium
How did the first gasses form?
After 1 000 000 years hydrogen and helium gathered in clouds of gases
What is it called when the gaddes clumped together in a Giant Space Cloud?
Nebula
How were stars and galaxies formed?
400 million years ago, solar nebula came together to form our Solar System with the sun (a star) at its centre.
What is the solar Nebular hypothesis?
The solar system formed our of a nebula which collapsed under its own gravity.
