Bias Flashcards
Reducing and Mitigating
What part of the brain is impacted the quickest by fatigue?
Prefrontal Lobe (where higher decision making occurs)
What are 3 strategies for reducing and mitigating bias?
- Self-awareness
- Exposing ourselves to counter-stereotypes
- Practicing self-care
Self-awareness is related to what?
Recognition
Self-management is related to what?
Regulation
What 3 situations increase the likelihood of bias?
- Situations that involve discretionary activities
- Ambiguous situations
- Fast-moving situations
What activities are susceptible to bias?
Discretionary activities:
* Traffic, bike, and person stops
* Self initiated patrol checks (location)
* Shall arrest vs. May arrest
What actions CANNOT be impacted by bias?
Non-discretionary actions
* Shall arrest
What situations activate implicit bias?
- Ambiguous situations (unknown)
- Fast-moving situations (time pressures)
Why do ambiguous situations activate implicit bias?
When it’s not clear what someone’s intentions or actions are, our brains rely on stereotypes or preconceived ideas to fill in the gaps.
In most humans, what group(s) are most linked to crime and violence?
Males of color, 18-25 years old.
Exposure to __________ __________ can reduce biases.
counter-stereotype information
In fast-moving situations, what can you do to help produce bias-free behavior?
- Slow down
- Reflect on the possibility of bias produced misinterpretation of the situation
- Deciding to override those biases
What is counter-stereotyping?
Exposure to information that goes against established attitudes to alter them.
Process and activities that reduce the “we” and “they” mentality and taking the perspective of others can reduce what biases?
Explicit and implicit biases.
What is a survival perspective?
Bias
