biallargeon Flashcards
what did Piaget believe about babies less than 8 - 9 months
Piaget believed that babies less than 8-9 months of age have a very primitive understanding of the nature of the physical world
e.g. he claimed they are not aware that objects continue to exist after they leave the visual field
where did Piaget reasoning come from
Piaget reasoning was based on his research showing that from his research showing that from this age babies would reach for an object removed from their view but prior to this they would immediately lose interest once the object was out of sight
What did Bailargeon suggest instead
Renee Bailargeon working in the 1980s pointed out that alternative research methods have suggested that younger babies may ave better - developed understanding of the physical world than previously thought
What did Bailargeon suggest instead
Renee Bailargeon working in the 1980s pointed out that alternative research methods have suggested that younger babies may ave better - developed understanding of the physical world than previously thought
she developed violation of expectation (VOE) method to investigate infant understanding of physical world
What is the billabong of expectation research
A method used to investigate infant knowledge of the world
The idea is that if children understand how the physical world operated then they will expect certain things to happen in particular situations
If these do not occur and children’s show surprise, this suggests that they have a intact knowledge of that aspect of the world
What is the procedure of Bailargeon’s research
PROCEDURE: In an early VOE experiment Baillargeo together with Maria Graber (1987) showed 24 babies, aged 5-6 months, a tall and a short rabbit passing behind with a window.
In the familiar event:
-the short rabbit is not visible until it appears on the other side due to its height
In the unfamiliar event:
-the tall rabbit would not be seen through the window as it moves form oneside of the screen to the other.
A baby with object permanence would show surprise when shown the unexpected event
In the unexpected condition:
What were the findings from Baillargeon’s research
The babies looked dor an average 33 07 seconds at the unexpected event compared to 25.11 seconds of the expected event
For the to be surprised it follows that they must have known rhay the tall rabbit should have reappeared at the windw
This demonstrates a good understanding of object permanence
What is Baillargeon’s theory of infant physical reasoning
Humans are born with physical rasoningasystem (or PRS) in other words we are born hrdwiredwuth not basic unsertsndingif the physical world and also the ability to learn moresetails easily a
