What is a minimal pair?
A
Minimal pairs are words that are exactly the same except for one difference in place of articulation, manner of articulation or voicing.

Example of a minimal pair?
A
‘bat’ and ‘pat’. This Is because when feature changes, the meaning changes. They show the differences that matter.

Contrastive phonemes are….?
A
sounds that change the meaning if they are changed.

Allophones?
A
The way that consonants and vowels are realised within a language.
(They are different kinds of a given phoneme, they are context dependent)

Why do we use [ ] brackets to describe allophones?
A
Because allophones represent phonetic production in real speech.
