Beta Oxidation Flashcards
4 steps of beta oxidation
1- oxidation
2 - hydration
3 - oxidation
4 - thiolysis
Step 1
Oxidation by FADH forms a double bond btw the the alpha and beta carbons of fatty acyl CoA
Alkane to alkene
FAD to FADH2
Enzyme used - acyl coA dehydrogenase
Step 2
Water is added across the double bond (hydration) to give an alcohol at the beta carbon
Alkene to alcohol
Uses H2O
Enzyme: enoyl CoA hydratase
Step 3 of beta oxidation
Oxidation of the alcohol by NAD+
alcohol to ketone
Uses enzyme B-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase
Step 4
Lysis (thiolysis) of bond btw alpha and beta carbons
Addition of CoASH
Enzyme: acetyltransferase
acyl-Co-A acyl
Thiolysis
A thiol analogue of a hydrolysis
What are the products of one round of beta oxidation
An Acetyl CoA
A FADH2
And NADH + H+
The fatty acyl CoA mlc gets shortened by 2 carbons
