Bereavement Flashcards
what is the main goal of bereavement therapy?
acceptance
what does effective bereavement therapy include?
empathic validation, information about death, and reassurances about future security
Dynamic therapy may reveal and address extremely irrational feelings the client might not consciously believe (e.g., anger at the loved one for dying, self-blame for somehow causing the death).
How can internalizing help someone that is grieving?
makes it possible to accept the physical loss. Memory is a key aspect of this work, which includes reviewing, organizing, and completing the relationship. Internalization means that, as a result of knowing the loved one, the client is a different person than he would otherwise be, with memories that enrich and guide his life.
