What is the aetiology of benzodiazepine overdose?
Overdose can be intentional as an act of self-harm, through recreational misuse, or accidental (such as a medication error).
What are the signs and symptoms of benzodiazepine overdose?
Impaired mental status
Drowsiness, slurred speech, ataxia
Decreased deep tendon reflexes
What are some investigations for benzodiazepine overdose?
Arterial/venous blood gas
FBC, U+Es, LFTs
ECG
Creatine kinase
Plasma paracetamol concentration
What is the management of benzodiazepine overdose?
Supportive care, consider flumazenil and activated charcoal
What are complications associated with benzodiaxepine overdose?
Respiratory arrest
Coma
What is the prognosis of benzodiazepine overdose?
Most patients make a full recovery with treatment.
