what is a fibroadenoma?
most common benign growth in the breast
usually in women of reproductive age
on examination
- highly mobile
- well defined and rubbery
- usually <5cm
- can be multiple and bilateral
potential excision if over 3cm
usually doesn’t increase risk of breast cancer but if a complex fibroadenoma, It will.
what is an adenoma?
a ductal adenoma is a benign glandular tumour, usually in older female population
nodular and can easily mimic malignancy
what is an intraductal papilloma?
benign breast condition, usually in women ages 40-50.
often present with bloody or clear nipple discharge.
appear similar to ductal carcinomas, on imaging and therefore usually require biopsy.
can be treated with microdochectomy.
what is a lipoma?
soft and mobile benign adipose tumour that are otherwise asymptomatic. have a low malignant potential and only removed if significantly large or causing symptomatic compressive or aesthetic issues.
what is a Phyllodes tumour?
rare fibroepithelial tumours
occur in older ages, comprised of both epithelial and stromal tissue.
should be widely excised or mastectomy is lesion is large
what are the clinical features of benign breast tumours?
generally
- mobile
- smooth borders
unlike malignant counterparts which have craggy surfaces, firmer consistency and can be fixed to different layers of tissue.
all suspicious lumps should undergo triple assessment
