A

acute paralysis of CN VII in absence of brain dysfunction. due to inflammatino of nerve within temporal bone. perhas mechanial compression.

Possible causes of Bells?

A

viruses - epstein barr, cytomegalovirus, adenovirus, HZ, HSV, rubella, mumps

what etiology of symptoms should be ruled out?

A

Stroke, lyme disease, tumors.

Diagnostics?

A

electromyography, imagin scans MRI or CT if really needed. rarely used. ALWAYS do Lyme dx titer!

Tx?

A

recovers in 4weeks - 6 mo. SL. protect eye with ocular tear substitutes lubricants or ete protection key! can use antivirals but not usually helpful.

Complications of eye include?

A

abnormal tear flow, impaired eye closure.
