Collins & The Sociological Imagination
according to collins, the SI can “empower the individual”. The SI helps us understand the structural forms of these social problems we see, and also helps us see that every day we create/reproduce these structures through our own actions.
What are the four stages of a social movement?
- Agitation
- Legitimation
- Beaurucrazation
- Institutionalization
What are the repertoires of collective action?
Tilly is 1986 made a list of the types of collective action. Physical protests, petitions, boycotting, online activism, and hashtag activism.
The Extinction Rebellion
It is a global environmental movement with the aim of using non-violent civil disobedience to compel government action to avoid tipping points in the climate system. The organizer stated that “only this kind of large scale economic disruption can rapidly bring the government to the table to discuss demands”
Framing & Climate Change
many climate change messages focus on future consequences and not present ones. Framing suggests that such a forward look may be unproductive to those who already oppose the idea of climate change.
