Behaviourism Flashcards
What is Tabular Rasa?
Where all behaviour is learnt and we are born as a blank slate
Is the Behaviourist approach Nature or Nurture?
Nurture
What is the law of contiguity?
All behaviour can be reduced to a simple stimulus-response association
What is environmental determinism?
We have a little free will and we are determined to act in a certain way by our environment
Is the approach nomothetic?
Yes!It uses the results of experiments to generalise to explain behaviours to everyone
Is the Behaviourist approach environmental reductionist?
Yes! It reduces human behaviour to just a stimulus response reaction
What are the Key experiments?
Pavlov and Skinner
What is Negative Reinforcement?
Involved the removal of or escaping from unpleasant consequences
What is positive reinforcement?
Increases the likelihood of a response occurring because it involves a reward for the behaviour
What is Operant conditioning learned through?
Reinforcement
What is classical conditioning learned through?
Association
What are the strengths of the behaviourist approach?
has practical applications
reductionist (IDA)
gives clear prediction
What are the weakness of this approach?
uses animals
only considers the nurture side
reductionist(IDA)
What was Pavlovs Research?
Revealed that dogs could be conditioned to salivate to the sound of a bell if that sound was repeatedly presented at the same time as they were given food.
Gradually Pavlovs dog learned to associate the sound of a bell with food
What is the two process Model?
Classical and Operant conditioning
