behavioural assumptions Flashcards
State assumption one
Humans are born a blank slate
Explain ‘ humans are born a blank slate’
humans are born Tabula rasa , experiences and interactions with enviroment makes us who we are - environmental determinism
Example of humans are born a blank slate
Little albert - watson and rayner 1920
state assumption 2
Behaviour is learnt through conditioning
Explain ‘ behaviour is learnt through conditioning’
two types : operant and classical
classical: new behaviour is learnt through association
operant : idea when people behave in a certain way and are rewarded for it behaviour will be repeated or if they are punished it will stop
Example ‘ Behaviour is learnt through conditioning’
Classical : Pavlov dogs
• food ucs , salvation ucr , bell ns
• ns + ucs -> cs + ucs = cr
operant : bf skinners box
• animals can behave in a certain way when rewarded
postive reinforcement = repeated behaviour
shocked after level = behaviour not repeated punished
State assumption 3
humans and animals learn in similar ways
explain ‘ humans and animals learn in similar ways
• laws of learning- apply to both - appropriate to study other species in order to understand human behaviours , possible to generalise explanations animal -> humans
example ‘ humans and animals learn in similar ways’
Pavolvs dogs : pavlov devised his principles of classical conditioning based on his experiments with dogs - used in SD phobias unlearned using association
