behavioural approach in explaining and treating phobias Flashcards
two process model
proposed by Mowrer
explain how phobias are learned
classical condition explains how phobas are initiated and operant conditiong explains how they are maintained
classical conditioning: Initiation
phobias initial aquired via association between a neutral stimulus and a unconditioned stimulus
operant conditioning-maintenance
phobias can be negatively reinforced
where behaviour is strengthed due to removal o unpleasent consequnece
e.g person with phobia of dogs
may try to avoid the dog by crossing iver teh road
avoidance reduces person axniety making them more likely to repated their behaviour-negatively reinforced
adv of behaviourst approach in explaining and treating phobias
treatments-e.g systematic desensitaisaiton
very successful with certain types of phobias
e.g spider phobias or blood injection phobias
correct in prosoing that this is how phobias are acquired in the first place
