Behavioral Therapies Flashcards
What is Classical conditioning?
Learning in the association of things taking place simultaneously (Ex Pavlov’s Dog - food associated with sound of ringing bell)
Define the unconditioned stimulus, the unconditioned response, the conditioned stimulus and conditioned response from the following scenario:
Dwight reaches for a mint every time Jim chimes his incoming email. Dwight becomes accustom to the routine and eventually begins holding out his hand when he hears an email notification despite lack of mint.
UCS - Mint
UCR - Reaches for mint
CS - Email chime
CR - Reaches for mint
What is extinction in relation to classical conditioning?
Cancelling learned associations. (Ex. Pavlov’s dog learning to forget the salivation response to rung bell)
What is generalization in relation to classical conditioning?
When other similar stimuli/situations also become conditioned stimuli for a conditioned response. (Ex. a person fearful of lady bugs becomes afraid of Dalmatians, things with polkadots and eventually things with holes.)
Best therapy for fears?
Systematic desensitization
Treatment options for phobias?
Classical conditioning or behavioral therapy
What is operant conditioning?
Learning association of things that take place sequentially.
What kind of operant conditioning is occurring?
A woman walks into B&BW and is greeted with a free sample from a sales associate. The woman returns to B&BW to shop in hopes for another sample
Positive reinforcement.
(+) = free sample reinforcement = increased shopping behavior
What kind of operant conditioning is occurring?
A child screams when it does not get its way. To stop the screaming the parent begins to give in to more of the child’s demands.
Negative reinforcement
(-) = stopping the screaming reinforcement = increased behavior of child getting way
What kind of operant conditioning is occurring?
A school boy kicks a ball at his classmate and is given detention. The person decides to stop kicking the ball at his classmates
Positive punishment
(+) = detention
punishment - decrease ball kicking behavior
What kind of operant conditioning is occurring?
A kid throws his toy from his high chair. The parent takes the kids toy to decrease the throwing
Negative punishment
(-) = taking toy
punishment - decrease in toy throwing behavior
Should you spank your kid
