What is the difference between substance abuse and substance dependence
Abuse = The problematic pattern on use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. Dependence = Need for increased amounts to achieve desired effects. Diminished effect with continued use and the same amount
Symptoms of intoxication: Alcohol intoxication
Slurred speech, loss of coordination, unsteady gait, nystagmus, impaired attention/memory. Stupor or coma
Symptoms of intoxication: Amphetamines & cocaine intoxication
Increased energy and alertness, anxiety/irritability, insomnia/exhaustion, hyperthermia, loss of appetite and weight, visual/auditory hallucinations, mydriasis, elevated BP and pulse, seizures
Symptoms of intoxication: Benzos & barbs intoxication
Euphoria, Incr seizure threshold, sedation/coma, Resp. depression, depressed reflexes, hypotension, hypoxemia, hypothermia
Symptoms of intoxication: PCP & LSD intoxication
Mydriasis, Incr pulse and BP, paranoia and anxiety, hallucinations
PCP - additional violent behavior, hyperactivity, nystagmus, muscle rigidity, seizures
Symptoms of intoxication: Morphine, heroin, codeine, methadone intoxication
Analgesia c/o loss of consciousness, apathy/lethargy, euphoria, itching, miosis, constipation, flushed warm skin, Resp depression, hyptension and depressed reflexes
Withdrawal symptoms in alcohol addiction
Delusions, tremulousness, hallucinations, seizures (Delirium tremens)
Treatment for alcohol withdrawal
Wait it out.
IV thiamine and glucose for chronic abusers.
