Disorders
Present at varying degrees and may interfere with child’s ability to participate in assessment and treatment
May use Ranchos Levels of Cognitive Functional- uses behavioral observation to categorize child’s functioning level and classifies pediatric level of consciousness
Visuospatial and Perceptual Impairments
difficulty distinguishing a give shape from surroundings
unable to put on orthosis and becomes dependent in functional mobility
Areas affected: occipital or temoral lobes
Language Skill Impairments
Expressive or receptive
Temporal lobe lesion
Impacts ability to follow instructions
Expressive impairs ability to communicate with others
Memory disorders
Memory assessed with child’s ability to learn new material
Explicit Memory- memory for facts and events, medial temporal cerebral areas including hippocampus and diencephalic nuclei
Implicit Memory- ability to develop skills and habits–> learning motor skills
- includes sensory motor and prefrontal cerebral cortices, basal ganglia, and cerebellum
Attention Difficulties
Low tolerance to frustration, poor social judgement, aggression, and impulsivity
Often experience global attention difficulties which often persist beyond the acute recovery phase and may affect performance and learning capabilities
