Empower the patient - don’t talk down to them. Use assessment, goal setting, action planning, problem solving, and follow up.

Have the patient explain why quitting will help them specifically.
Risks - ask the patient to identify negative consequences of tobacco use.
Rewards and roadblocks
Have the patient identify the rewards (self explanatory) and specific challenges they will have to overcome.

Varenicline - nicotine agonist.
Bupropion - antidepressant
