Who were the Conquistadors?
The conquistadors were Spanish explorers and warriors who successfully conquered much of America in the 16th century.
Who was Cortes and What did he do?
Hernán Cortés, in 1519, led 400 men against Aztec Mexico, eventually conquering the capital city of Tenochtitlán (now Mexico City). He was a Conquistador of Spain.
Who was Pizzaro and What did he do?
Pizarro was a Spanish Conquistador who conquered Cuzco, an important Inca city, and founded the city of Lima, now the capital of Peru. he conquered the Incan Empire in Peru.
What was the Encomienda and how did it affect Native Americans?
The Encomienda allowed Spanish to put the Native Americans to work as slaves in the mines and farms of Central America. The world was very hard and dangerous and many native American died, causing a large decrease in their population.
How did Culture blend in Spanish America?
In Spanish America the Spanish adapted some native cultures and began eating variations of their foods, studying their architecture, and having children together. This caused the two cultures to blend together.
How did Portuguese settle South America?
Portugal settled areas of brazil and used the land for lumber, and for cattle farming. There was no wealth in Brazil from Gold or silver, but they were still able to put slaves to work on cattle ranches.
How did France settle North America?
France settled areas of Canada and down to Louisiana West of the Mississipi. France was distracted with wars in Europe and did not pay much attention to the new world. The could not farm in the cold climate of canada so they trapped and fished. They did not grow as a population quickly because of thier climate.
How did England Settle North America?
England Established Colonies along the Eastern Coastline. people searching religious freedom, or being persecuted came to colonize the land. In the south they grew tobacco and other cash crops for money and in the North fishing, timber, and ship building was the main source of money. The colonies grew fast after the people learned about the land.
How were slaves treated in the Atlantic Slave Trade?
Slaves were put through harsh conditions. They were treated as property, not human beings. 1/2 of the slaves were killed on the ships to America from famine or disease.
What were the effects of the Atlantic Slave Trade?
The slave trade brought great wealth to European merchants, and helped colonize the new world. However it also displaced 11 million people from their homeland and destabilised Africa .
What was the Columbian Exchange?
It was the widespread transfer of animals, plants, culture, human populations, technology, and ideas between the American and Afro-Eurasian hemispheres.
How is the Columbian Exchange expressed today?
Food items like pizza would not have been possible for Italians to make without tomatoes from the new world.
They also wouldn’t have been able to spaghetti, without noodles from china.
