Portuguese Prince Henry sponsored exploration and the country tried to sail east to India.
Who was Vasca Da Gama?
Vasca Da Gama sailed east for Portugal under the Horn of Africa, until he reached a spice port in India. He allowed Portugal t seize key trading ports around the Indian Ocean. .
How did Spain participate in the Global Age?
Christopher Columbus got funding from Spain and sailed West to find a trade route to India assuming that the world was round. HE thought he had found India, but he had discovered the continent of America.
Who circumnavigated the globe?
Ferdinand Magellan and his crew were the first people to circumnavigate the globe, meaning travel all the way around. Magellan died but his crew is credited with the accomplishment.
How and Why did the Portuguese establish footholds on Africa’s Coast?
The Portuguese took control over many African Trading posts that were once controlled by Arabs. They were able to use these posts to repair or restock thier ships to India, and they also were able to take part in the Slave Trade.
How did the Slave trade benefit European Nations?
Slaves bought in Africa were brought to the New world and put on Plantations to work for no pay as slaves. Money was made off of this because slaves could farm, or mine, and Europeans could make money off there hard work.
How did the slave trade destabilize African territories?
African Rulers sold slaves to buy weapons to grow their power and wealth. Because Slaves were so valuable, Africans would go to war with the sole purpose of gathering slaves to sell to Europeans. African rulers who wanted to defend themselves from being attacked needed guns, which could only be bought by selling European slaves. This caused lots of war in Africa.
How did Portugal build a trading empire in South and Southeast Asia?
The Portuguese seized an island of the coast of India and used it as their major military base establish a trading empire in Asia.
How did the Dutch seize power in Asia?
The Dutch settled Cape Town, a strategic port in the sea route to India. The also established the Dutch East India Trading Company and were able to make lots of money because they were not regulated by the government.
How did Spain seize power in Asia?
Spain colonized the islands of the Philippines and used it as a port to maintain power in the Asian Empire.
What was the Mughal Empire? What happened as it fell apart?
It was the center of the spice trade and more powerful than any kingdom in Europe.
As the empire fell apart European nations that had established ports in Asia fought for power over the land.
What was European Contact like with Ming China?
China only granted the Portuguese with one port for trading, and demanded gold and silver for their goods, for their craftsmanship was of superior skill. China was Very strict with thier trading policy with Europe.
How did Japan and Korea react with Europeans?
Koreans isolated themselves completely and did not trade or communicate with Europeans.
Japanese at first accepted trading and communicating with Europeans but after they learned how Europeans took over and Colonized the Philippines they stopped communication with Europeans.
