beetje 1.1 en 1.2 breathing and combustion Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
Process where plants convert water and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen using sunlight energy
What are chloroplasts?
Plant cell structures where photosynthesis takes place
What is metabolism?
The conversion of substances into other substances within cells, needed to stay alive
What is glucose?
An energy-rich substance produced by plants that can be used to make other substances
What are mitochondria
Cell organelles that break down glucose to release energy; present in both plant and animal cells
What is the main product of photosynthesis?
Glucose (and oxygen as a byproduct)
Why do muscle cells have more mitochondria?
Because they need more energy and therefore require more glucose breakdown
What happens during glucose breakdown?
Energy is released and can be used by the cell for growth and making new substances
respiration (cellular)
the breakdown of glucose in cells
fuel (for respiration)
substance that is burned/metabolized
