1.4 breathing and combustion Flashcards
What are the two types of breathing?
- Chest (thoracic) breathing
- Abdominal (diaphragmatic) breathing
What is gas exchange?
The absorption of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide through the alveoli in lungs
How does chest breathing work?
Intercostal muscles contract to move ribs and breastbone upward, expanding chest cavity for inhalation; muscles relax for exhalation
How does abdominal breathing work?
Diaphragm contracts and moves downward, pushing abdominal organs forward to expand chest cavity; returns to normal position for exhalation
What are the main respiratory muscles?
Back: - Diaphragm
- Diaphragm
Abdominal muscles
Intercostal muscles
Collarbone muscles
What happens during inhalation?
hest cavity expands, lungs expand, air is drawn in, oxygen enters bloodstream through alveoli
What happens during exhalation?
Muscles relax, chest cavity shrinks, lungs become smaller, air is forced out containing carbon dioxide
What is normal breathing?
A combination of both chest and abdominal breathing methods
