1.3 breathing and combustion Flashcards
What is the correct path of air through the respiratory system?
Nasal/oral cavity → pharynx → larynx → trachea → bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli
What is the diaphragm?
A tough muscular membrane that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity
What are the three main functions of the nasal cavity
- Warms incoming air
- Moistens the air
- Filters dust and germs
What is the epiglottis?
A flap that closes off the windpipe when swallowing food
What is the uvula?
A flap that closes off the nasal cavity when swallowing food
What are alveoli?
Tiny air sacs at the end of bronchioles where gas exchange occurs; total surface area 70-100 m²
What are pulmonary capillaries?
Small blood vessels surrounding the alveoli where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange takes place
What is the function of cilia?
: Small hairs that sweep mucus and dust particles towards the pharynx for swallowing
