Becker Et Al Flashcards
What was the method of Becker?
Self report; clinical tests; correlation. A correlation between beliefs reported during interviews and compliance with self reported administration of asthma medication.
How many participants were in Becker?
111 mothers, aged 17-59, with children aged from 9 months to 19 years old.
What was the procedure used in Becker?
Each mother was interviewed and asked questions regarding their perceptions of:
- Their child’s susceptibility to illness and asthma
- Their beliefs about how serious asthma is
- How much their child’s asthma interfered with their child’s education, caused embarrassment and interferes with their mothers activities.
What were the results of Becker et al?
Positive correlation between a mothers belief about her child’s susceptibility and compliance.
Correlation between severity and compliance. Negative correlation between compliance and disruption of daily routines.
Two demographic factors= marital status and educational level
Mothers compliant reported less faith in medical practitioners.
What were the conclusions of Becker?
The HBM is a useful model to predict and explain different levels of compliance with medical regimes.
What is the aim of Becker?
To use the HBM to explain mothers adherence to a drug regime for their asthmatic children.
