Beck Ch 1 Flashcards
What are the three levels that cognitions occur at? Provide examples of each
- Automatic thoughts, most superficial e.g., “I’m too tired to do anything”
- Intermediate beliefs, underlying assumptions e.g., “If I try to initiate relationships, I’ll get rejected”
- Core beliefs (about self, others, the world), deepest level, e.g., “I’m helpless”; “Other people will hurt me”; “The world is dangerous”
What level of cognitions does CBT work with?
All 3 levels: Modifying both automatic thoughts AND underlying dysfunctional intermediate and core beliefs is needed to produce enduring change
How is Recovery-oriented CBT similar to CBT? Different from CBT?
It is similar in that it has the same theoretical foundation using the cognitive model in conceptualization
It is different in that it adds additional emphasis on client’s adaptive beliefs, behavioural strategies, and factors that maintain positive mood, in the cognitive formulation
Rather than emphasizing symptoms and psychopathology, CT-R emphasizes clients’ strengths, personal qualities, skills, and resources
Why was Recovery-oriented CBT developed?
It was developed as an alternative approach to the medical model for individuals diagnosed with a serious mental health condition
How does CBT treat time orientation? What about recovery oriented CBT?
Traditional CBT focuses on problems that arose in the past week, CBT techniques are used to address them.
Recovery oriented CBT focuses more on client’s aspirations for the future, their values, and steps they can take each week towards their goals. CBT techniques are used to overcome challenges or obstacles in taking these steps.
