BICAMERAL LEGISLATURE

APPORTIONMENT

IMPEACHMENT
D: the power delegated to the House of Representatives in the Constitution to charge the president, Vice President, or other “civil officers,” including federal judges, with “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” This is the first step in the constitutional process of removing government officials from office.

EDMUND BURKE

TRUSTEE

D: role played by a representative who votes the way his or her constituents would want, regardless of personal opinions; may refer to an elected representative to Congress or a representative to the party convention.
S: Before the president has his surgery, he will delegate his responsibilities to the vice-president.
POLITICO
D: an elected representative who acts as a trustee or as a delegate, depending on the issue.
S: A politico should have the ability to give their best opinions and be rational with their decisions.
INCUMBENCY
D: already holding an office.
S: During Trump’s incumbency, he managed to waste millions of dollars to build a wall that is going to be of no use.
REDISTRICTING
D: the process of redrawing congressional districts to reflect increases or decreases in seats allotted to the states, as well as population shifts within a state.
S: He regarded congressional redistricting as a major issue.
GERRYMANDERING
D: the drawing of congressional districts to produce a particular electoral outcome without regard to the shape of the district.
S: They are able to gerrymander the results to however they want.
MAJORITY PARTY
D: the political party in each house of Congress with the most members.
S: The head of state, the prime minister, is a member of the majority party in a multiparty system.
MINORITY PARTY
D: the political party in each house of Congress with the second most members.
S: For eight years, he toiled in the House minority party.
PARTY CAUCUS (OR CONFERENCE)
D: a formal gathering of all party members.
S: They repeatedly noted that 85 percent of the party caucus voted together.
SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE
D: the only officer of the House of Representatives specifically mentioned in the Constitution; the chamber’s most powerful position; traditionally a member of the majority party.
S: The have been fifty-four individuals that have served as speakers of the house.
MAJORITY LEADER
D: the head of the party controlling the most seats in the House of Representatives or the Senate; is second in authority to the Speaker of the House and in the Senate in regarded as its most powerful member.
S: Being majority leader is a good position to be in.
MINORITY LEADER
D: the head of the party with the second highest number of elected representatives in the House of Representatives or the Senate.
S: He will be running for minority leader next year.
WHIP
D: party leader who keeps close contact with all members of his or her party, takes vote counts on key legislation, prepares summaries of bills, and acts as a communications link within a party.
S: Communication is the key between the whip and its members.
PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE
D: the official chair of the Senate; usually the most senior member of the majority party.
S: The Senate shall choose their other officers, and also a President pro tempore.
