Bearings (1) Flashcards
Bearings
Accommodate and support both motion and force.
3 types of motion
Rotary, linear, and combined
Radial loads
Act at right angles to the shaft or axis of rotation
Thrust loads
Act parallel to the axis of rotation
2 major factors of bearings
Speed (v) and load (p)
Inside race?
Shaft bore
Outside race?
Housing bore
2 types of bearings?
Plain and rolling element
Plain bearing
Allows any direction of rotation
Oscillating shaft
Good when a shaft doesn’t make a full rotation
Metallic plain bearings are made from?
Bronze, copper, aluminum, lead, and silver
Metallic plain bearing advantages
Higher load capacity, wide temp range, structural integrity, and cost to perform ratio
Nonmetallic plain bearing advantages?
Handling shock and vibration, wide temp range, structural integrity, and cost to perform ratio
Hydrostatic lubrication
External pump supplies pressure. Full film for no metal to metal contact
Boundary lubrication
Bearing and shaft rub together with thin film
Mixed film lubrication
Part of load is supported by film and the rest by hydrodynamic pressure
Full film
Thick continuous film
Boundary and mixed film upgraded by?
Increase speed, increase viscosity, decrease load, and improve finish
How thick are bearing grooves
One quarter of the wall thickness
2 types of plain bearings
Metallic and nonmetallic
