Bauhaus Materials of Construction 2 Flashcards
A broad ridge or pair of ridges projecting at an angle from the edge of a structural shape in order to strengthen or stiffen it
Flange
Any brick, concrete, or natural stone product used for paving extend surfaces
Paver
The trade of laying tiles with butting joints as flong, wall covering
Tiling
A flat clay tile used for roofing; applied in an overlapping pattern
Shingle tile
An exterior finish, composed of some combination of portland cement, lime, and sand, which are mixed with water, which dries to a very hard textured surface
Stucco
A fine-grained, cohesive, natural earthy material; plastic when sufficiently wet; rigid when dried; vitrified when heated in a kiln to a sufficiently high temperature
Clay
A hard, brittle metamorphic rock consisting mainly of clay minerals, characterized by good cleavage along parallel planes; used extensively as dimension stone in thin as surfacing on composition roofing
Slate
A cementitious binder used in most modern structural concrete; manufactured by grinding and “burning” a mixture of limestone with clay or shale with a small amount of gypsum
Portland cement
A slender nail with a small, slightly flared head used for finishing work
Casing nail
A heavy soil, composed largely of clay and silt in sufficient quantities to form a matrix in which sand particles are firmly imbedded; water is added, and straw, manure, and fragments of tile are sometimes combined with this mixture to provide increased mechanical strength and cohesion when it dries
Adobe
A type of weatherproofing for exterior walls characteristics of wood frame buildings, consisting of boards placed one above the other horizontally and facing out so that they overlap and shed rainwater onto the board below
Clapboard
Mineral soil composed of particles between 0.06 mm and 2 mm in size
Sand
A classification of granular mineral material, broken stone composed of particles from 2mm to 6mm in size
Gravel
Any of the different finishes for the upper interior enclosure of a space or chamber
Ceiling
A treatment for mortar or concrete, either as an admixture or a surface coating, to impede the passenger or absorption of water or vapor
Waterproofing or dampproofing
A mechanical device that mixed the ingredients of concrete, which impels through a hose to the place where it has to be poured
Concrete pump
Any rigid sheet material of timber, mineral fiber, plastics, gypsum used in construction for cladding and lining frames, as a surface for a finish as an insulation or as bracing
Building board
A non-bearing exterior wall that is independent of the building’s structural frame of beams or girders
Curtain wall
Any of various fired clay tiles used for surfacing walls, floors, and countertops
Ceramic tile
A mixture of a solid pigment suspended in a liquid vehicle applied as a thin, usually opaque coating to a surface for protection and decoration
Paint
