Bauhaus Materials of Construction 1 Flashcards
The internal resistance or reaction of an elastic body to external forces applied to it (force per unit area)
Stress
Resiliency of the ability of a material to bend, stretch, and compress without permanent damage
Elasticity
Measure of a force required to push or pull a material into its elastic limit
Stiffness
Material’s property that permits deformation without permanent fracture
Malleability
A material’s transmission, reflection, and absorption of visible light and radiant heat must be evaluated when used as a finish surface of a room
Insulation
The density and hardness must be checked against tear, denting, and abrasion including the cost required for maintenance
Durability
The water content corresponding to the limit between the liquid and plastic states of consistency of soil
Liquid limit
Thermal insulation in the form of granules, nodules, fibers, powder, flakes, or shreds; may be hand-packed, pneumatically placed, or poured into cavities or over supporting membranes
Loose-fill insulation
A Portland cement containing a relatively small amount of sodium or potassium or both
Low-alkali cement
A thermosetting resin-impregnated, wear-resistant paper, often with a decorative wood-grain print which has been applied, under pressure, at a high temperature to plywood, fiberboard, particleboard, etc. usually at a pressure of 150 to 250 lb. per sqm. (7.5 to 10.5 kg per sqm)
Low-pressure overlay
A flat hand tool consisting of a usually rectangular sheet of metal with a handle used to spread and shape plaster or mortar; also to impart a fairly smooth finish surface to a concrete floor
Trowel
A plastic mixture of lime or cement, or a combination of both, with sand and water, used as a bonding agent in masonry construction
Mortar
A rubble wall having discontinuous but approximately level beds or courses
Random rubble
A stone that has been quarried, cut, shaped, and dressed for use in the construction industry
Natural stone
A masonry unit of clay, formed into a rectangular prism while plastic and hardened by firing in a kiln or drying in the sun
Brick
A brick aid on its edge so that its end is visible
Rowlock
A rock that is formed by crystallization of molten magma, as granite, obsidian, and malachite
Igneous rock
Any part of a building, structure, cladding, or paving that incorporates natural stone as a primary material; construction and detailing in stone
Stonework
A rubble wall built of squared stones of varying sizes and coursed at every third or fourth stone
Square rubble
Any portion of a building above the first floor projecting over the sidewalk beyond the first-story wall used as protection for pedestrians against rain or sun
