they were in a 60 mile long valley and had to cross the Isonzo River to take heights (flooding)
Results of Isonzo
in first two weeks, Italy suffered 60,000 casualties
- in 1915 there were four battles
- in 1916 there were five battles
- in 1917 there were two battles
- 50% of all Italians KIA (300,000)
- 17% of all AH KIA (200,000)
Tannenberg strategies
- one russian army would advance from the east and the second would invade from the south because they hated each other

Rennenkampf won his victory at Gumbinnen, then halted his advance and abandoned Samsonov
German Tannenberg plan
Germans concentrated their forces and received radio messages from Rennenkampf stating his position, giving the Germans what they needed to know
- germans then surrounded Samsonov
Second Battle of Ypres
Germany surprise attacked the Allies with heavy shelling and chlorine gas - led to a 4 mile gap in the Allied line. Germans were reluctant to move into the gas cloud and the gap was filled by the Canadian and British troops

Paris was preparing for the Germans to lay siege, France switched forces from east to form the new Sixth Army on the left

German Second Army pinned down French Fifths right wing, - the germ 1st army started heading for the capital, compromising the Schlieffen Plan. The farther south the german 1st army went, the more exposed its right flank became. The french fifth advanced into the gap
