Batteries Flashcards
1
Q
What is the purpose of a vehicle battery?
A
- It provides power to start the engine.
- Powers the starter motor, ignition, and fuel injection
2
Q
What does the alternator generate energy for?
A
- The ignition, computers, lights, radio, horn, and other accessories; in other words, the electrical system.
3
Q
What is the purpose of an alternator, and how does it function?
A
- generates energy that will charge the battery, and supply energy to the electrical system.
- It converts mechanical (belt driven energy) to electrical energy.
4
Q
How does an automotive battery function?
A
- It converts chemical energy into electrical energy.
5
Q
How many volts does an automotive battery have?
A
- 12.6 volts
- 6 individual cells (2.1v in each cell)
6
Q
What is the average life expectancy of a vehicle battery?
A
- An automotive battery lasts about 4 - 6 years.
7
Q
What type of gas releases when a battery is charging?
A
- Hydrogen
8
Q
What is the electrolyte mixture in a battery?
A
- 36% acid, 64% water = Electrolyte
9
Q
How does a memory saver function?
A
- It provides power to the modules when the battery is disconnected.
- It saves radio presets and security system information
- It plugs in to the connecter under the dash (where the scanner tool connects).
10
Q
What is the correct order when removing and installing battery terminals?
A
- NPPN
- It prevents the chance of the battery from giving energy to unwanted areas.
11
Q
What is the step by step procedure to servicing a battery?
A
- disconnect and clean battery terminals and post.
- determine the CCA of the battery (sticker found on battery)
- check the electrolyte level in each cell.
- test the battery with the vat-40 to determine if the battery meets its specs.
12
Q
How do you test an alternator?
A
- Hook up a DMM or the VAT-40 to the battery
- Start engine - alternator should produce between 13.7 and 14.7v
13
Q
How much current does a starter motor draw from the battery?
A
60 - 300 amps
