Basics Quiz Flashcards
What is the unit of measurement for force?
Newtons (N)
What is the definition of a Newton?
Amount of force required to give a 1-kg mass an acceleration of 1 meter/second/second
What type of quantity is force?
Vector
What is the formula for force?
Force = mass X acceleration
What is the definition of mass?
Quantity of matter that makes up a sample
What is the definition of acceleration?
Change in velocity over a unit of time
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
Law of Inertia - an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force
What is the definition of inertia?
Resistance to having its state of motion changed by application of force
What does it mean in regards to inertia to say that a system is in equilibrium?
It is either at rest or moving with a constant velocity
What is Newton’s second law of motion?
Law of Force and Acceleration - the acceleration of an object depends directly upon the net force acting upon the object and inversely upon the mass of the object (F=ma)
What is the benefit of using a drop piece for a chiropractic technique in regards to force?
Allows for increased acceleration, and therefore less force is needed to deliver the adjustment (F=ma)
What is Newton’s third law of motion?
Law of Action and Reaction - for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
What type of stress is the intensity of force perpendicular to the surface on which it acts? Parallel?
Normal stress = perpendicular
Shear stress = parallel
What type of friction exists when two contacting surfaces are not currently sliding relative to each other but do possess the potential for movement?
Static friction
What is the general ratio required to initiate a sliding motion between two bodies called?
Coefficient of (static) friction
