BASICS OF INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM Flashcards
What are the two major components of the integumentary system?
- Skin (cutaneous membrane)
- Accessory structures
What are the two components of skin (cutaneous membrane)?
- Epidermis (epithelium)
- Dermis (connective tissue)
What are the three components of accessory structures?
- Exocrine glands
- Hair
- Nails
What are the four functions of the integumentary system?
- Physical and immunological protection
- Thermoregulation
- Sensation
- Metabolic functions
What are the two metabolic functions?
- Vitamin D synthesis
- Stores energy as subcutaneous fat
What are the four types of tissue?
- Epithelium
- Connective tissue
- Muscle (smooth)
- Nerve
What are the two aspects of epithelium tissue?
- Covers surface
- Forms boundary
What are the two aspects of connective tissue?
- Supports epithelium
- Provides strength and resiliency
What are the two aspects of muscle (smooth) tissue?
- Controls diameter of blood vessels (involuntary - synthesis autonomic response)
- Adjusts hair position
What are the three aspects of nerve tissue?
- Controls smooth muscle
- Generates sensation (tactile, pressure, temperature, etc)
- Stimulates exocrine glands
What are the three major characteristics of skin?
- Largest organ system of the body
- Covers area of 2m^2
- Ranges in thickness between 0.5 mm and 4.0 mm
Structure of SKIN from superficial to deepest (3):
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Hypodermis (subcutaneous layer)
What does the peak-and-valley interface between the dermis and epidermis allow?
Allow for a tight bond between different layers of skin (can resist shearing stresses)
