What does HHPS stand for?
Hazardous Household Products Symbols
Draw and explain the symbols (4+3) + give examples
Check notes!
Draw and explain all materials

what are the three types of tongs
crucible, beaker, test-tube
what heats intensely
pipestem triangle, crucible & cover
what heats gently
wire gauze
which clamps are used for what
utility clamp = test tubes
iron ring clamp = beaker
what is erlenmeyer flask good for
shape is good for rubber stoppers, good for stirring, good for storing solution
what is used to measure out liquids
graduated cylinder = accurate
buret = highly accurate
What is the scientific method?
- Question/problem
- Research
- Hypothesis
- Conduct and experiment
- Analyze your data
- Conclusion (hypothesis is correct/partially correct/wrong)
- Report your results
What is a qualitative observation?
Something you observe that has a quality to it
What is a quantitative observation?
Something you observe that has a quantity
What is a control?
A part of the experiment that is not being tested and is used for comparison.
What is a variable?
Any part of an experiment that can change.
Independent variable & dependent variable & control variable
IV: The part of the experiment that is changed by the scientists or person performing the experiment
DV: The part of the experiment that is affected by the independent variable
CV: A variable that we know could affect the results, so we deliberately “control” it
The hypothesis
If (the independent variable is increased/decreased)
Then (the dependent variable will…)
Because (based on your educated theory)
Test vs Trial
Test: The IV values (should have at least 5, 7 for bio)
Trial: The # of times you repeat a test (should be 3, 5 for bio)
What is an SDS?
A safety data sheet
What should you include when writing materials for a lab
Equipment and chemicals (the total amount)
What are the key points of a good method/procedure
- no pronouns
- numbered list
- small steps
- 5 tests, 3 trials
- disposal instruction caustic, acidic, organic
pH > 7 pH<7
What should a sample calculation have
- specific title
- the equation without actual values
- the name of the test being sampled
- calculation
- units
