Basic terminology of Pathophysiology Flashcards
Acute
disease with sudden onset of signs and symptoms
Chronic
condition with insidious slow onset
long lasting and progressive effects
Disease
a disorder of function with a distinctive group of symptoms - LEADING TO A LOSS OF HOMEOSTASIS IN THE BODY
Epidemic
widespread of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time
Pandemic
widespread of an infectious disease over a whole country or world
Epidemiology
The study of the distribution of disease amongst a population
- incidence
- distribution
- control of diseases
Aetiology
The study of the causes/origins of the disease
Exacerbation
making a problem worse
Homeostasis
Maintaining a stable or constant environment in the body including
- bp
- temp
- ph
Latrogenic
caused by a medical treatment procedure or error
Idiopathic
no known cause
Incidence
number of new cases of a disease in a population within a given period
Incubation period
time between initial exposure to infection and the appearance of first signs of infection
Insidious
a disease with an onset of only vague and mild signs
Latent stage
time between stimulus and reaction
Morbidity
- rate at which disease occurs
- proportion of group affected by disease
Mortality
number of deaths in a group for a specific disease in a population
Pathophysiology
functional changes due to disease
Prevalence
total number of new existing cases of a disease in a specific population at a given time
Prophylaxis
treatment given or action taken to prevent disease
Remission
absence or near absence of the signs and symptoms of a treating condition.
Sequela
pathological condition resulting from a disease, injury, therapy, or other trauma.
Sign
something found during a physical exam
Symptom
Symptoms are subjective but are typically identified by the person/patient
Syndrome
a group of symptoms which consistently occur together
