What is meant by “holding” a vehicle?
When a has pulled over, waiting to collect somebody or something. It is not fully parked. The driver must be in the vehicle, or continuously coming and going.
Time limit: 10mins or however long it takes to load/off-load the vehicle.
What is a multipurpose lane?
The type of lane which multitrack vehicles and bicycles may share with special courtesy to the bicycle, should their traffic lane not have sufficient width to overtake safely, or if driving is regulated by arrows on the roadway indicating the drivers to range in.
What is a side lane (“frontage” lane)
A roadway running next to a main road, in the same direction, but separated by a traffic island.
What is a service lane?
A service lane (Pannestreife) is a designated lane to the far left on the Autobahn, not marked as a deceleration of acceleration lane.
People may only use/stop in this lane in case of breakdown or emergency.
What is a deceleration lane?
A deceleration lane (Verzögerungsstreifen) is used for dramatically reducing speed when leaving the highway, just before taking an exit.
What is an acceleration lane?
The acceleration lane (Beschleunigungsstreifen) is used to try to match the speed of the Autobahn traffic, and merge into the far right lane.
What is the definition of overtaking?
Overtaking (Überholen) happens when two vehicles are driving in the same direction, at different speeds, on the same road.
What is the definition of passing by?
Passing/driving by (Vorbeifahren) happens when a vehicle drives past a stationary obstacle (a different vehicle or otherwise), on the same road.
Is driving past a vehicle that is in the deceleration lane (Autobahn) considered overtaking?
No.
Is driving past a vehicle that is in the acceleration lane (Autobahn) considered overtaking?
No.
Is driving past a bicycle on a bicycle lane considered overtaking?
No.
Is driving past a queue/row of vehicles, going a different speeds, on roads with free-choice lanes (urban areas) considered overtaking
No.
What is a Geistfahrer (“Ghost driver”)?
A person who is driving the wrong way (usually) on the Autobahn.
