Basic Terminology Flashcards
Genotype
set of alleles that make up genetic constitution, either at all loci, or more typically at a single locus
homozygote
a person has two identical alleles
heterozygote
a person has two different alleles (one normal and one mutant)
complex (compound) heterozygote
a person with two different mutant alleles hemizygote
Phenotype
observable expression of a genotype (and/or the effect of environment)
codominant
both different alleles are expressed
dominant
is expressed even in heterozygote form
recessive
is expressed only in homozygote form
Genome
total genetic material of a cell or organism
Allele
variant of a gene
Multiple allelism
gene has many (few-several hundreds) alleles in the population
Wild (normal) allele
most frequent allele of a gene in the population
Locus
position of a gene in the chromosome
Gene
DNA sequence encoding functional molecules (mRNA-s, tRNA-s, rRNA-s, miRNA-s)
Restriction endonucleases
Used to “cut” DNA fragments in the locations necessary for gene examination
