steps for harmonizing a melody

A
  1. determine the key
  2. find the phrase endings
  3. choose the cadences for the phrase endings
  4. choose a pre-cadential chord (often ii, ii6, IV or IV6. perhaps I6)
  5. choose the first chord (usually I or V)
  6. fill in the remaining bass notes by looking for patterns in the melody that support chord progressions
    ie. I-V6, I-vii6-I6)
  7. check for parallel 5ths and 8ves between bass and soprano
  8. fill in alto and tenor
