CBC with differential
CBC +
percentage and absolute differential counts (PMN, lymph, baso, eos, mono, atypical monos)
BMP
basic metabolic profile:
glucose, BUN, creatinine, BUN:creatinine ratio, potassium, sodium, chloride, CO2, eGFR
CMP
comprehensive metabolic profile:
BMP +

Liver Function Tests (LFTs)
liver profile/panel
AST/ALT, Alk Phos, bilirubin
liver inflammation, biliary obstruction, or hemolysis
AST/ALT
ALT is specific to liver; AST found also in heart, blood, and skeletal muscle
Amylase/Lipase
pancreatitis
Cardiac Enzymes
Troponin I, BNP, d-dimer
Coagulation studies
PT/INR, PTT
evaluate anticoagulation therapy like Coumadin and heparin
Urinalysis (UA)
glucose, ketones, specific gravity, protein, myoglobin (NOT hemoglobin), RBCs, WBCs, casts
presence of nitrates, leukocyte esterase, WBCs, and bacteria indicate UTI
urine toxicology
amphetamines, cocaine, benzos, barbiturates, opiates, marijuana, and PCP
fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
detect hidden (occult) blood loss in stool
Arterial Blood Gas (ABG)
ventilation/perfusion
acid/base status
ASA (apsirin)
toxicity - mixed acid-base disturbance: early respiratory alkalosis followed by elevated anion gap metabolic acidosis
acetone (serum or plasma)
ketones
