Q

what are Nucleotides made up of.

A

nucleotides have 3 parts:
Sugar, a Phosphate and Nitrogen bases.
the phosphate and sugar make up the “backbone” of the structure.

Q

what are the two kinds of bases in DNA?

A

Pyrimidines are single ring bases
Purines are double ring bases
Thymine and cytosine each have one ring of carbon and nitrogen atoms. (pyrimidines)
Adenine and guanine each have two rings of carbon and nitrogen atoms. (purines)

Q

are hydrogen bonds strong?

A

Hydrogen bonds are weak but there are millions and millions of them in a single molecule. which makes that molecule strong.

Q

how do the strands work in DNA?

A

One strand of DNA goes from 3’ to 5’ (sugars). Its call the leading strand
The other strand is opposite in direction going 5’ to 3’ (sugars) It’s called the lagging strand
Remember the strands are antiparallel 5’ →’3 and 3’ → 5’
