Basic Gastric Physiology Flashcards
What are the two regions of the stomach?
Oxyntic Mucosa
Antral Region
What cells are contained in the OM?
Parietal Cells
Chief Cells
ECL Cells
What do Parietal Cells secrete?
Gastric Juice (HCL) and Intrinsic Factor
What does Chief cells secrete?
Pepsinogen
What do Enterochromaffin Like Cells secrete? (ECL cells)
Histamine
What cells are contained in the Antrum?
G Cells
D Cells
What do G cells secrete?
Gastrin
What do D cells secrete?
Somatostatin
Where are most functional cells found?
Gastric Pits
Where are the endocrine cells found?
Bottom of the gastric pits
Where are the mucous cells found?
Top of the gastric pits
Explain the location of cells in gastric pits?
Endocrine cells are at the bottom and mucous cells are at the top to produce an alkaline layer of mucous to protect the cells from the acidic secretion of the OM
The higher the rate of secretion of gastric juices by parietal cells, the more/less acidic it is?
More acidic
Describe pernicious anaemia?
This is caused by B12 deficiency. It can be caused by destruction of the OM as this is where the parietal cells that secrete intrinsic factor are located. intrinisc factor binds to B12 and allows it to be absorbed in the distal ileum.
What does Gastrin do?
Increases gastric acid secretion and prepares the rest of the stomach for digestion
Where is Gastrin secreted from?
G cells of the Antrum
What stimulates Gastrin secretion?
ACh released from vagus nerve in response to a food bolus in the stomach
Amino acids and peptides in the stomach
What does Histamine do?
Increases acid secretion
What receptors does Histamine act on?
H2 receptors of parietal cells
What stimulates Histamine secretion?
ACh and Gastrin
Where is Histamine secreted from?
Enterochromaffin Like Cells (ELC) in the OM
What does Somatostatin do?
Inhibits gastric acid secretion
Where is Somatostatin released from?
D cells of the Antrum
What is CCK?
Is it a digestive hormone
