Basic First Aid, CPR, and Firefighting Flashcards
What are the three objectives of first aid?
- Maintain Breathing
- Stop Bleeding
- Prevent or treat for shock
11 Basic Wounds
- Fractures *Sucking Chest Wound
- Abdominal Evisceration *Laceration
- Massive Hemorrhage/ Amputation *Electrical Shock *Smoke Inhalation *Burns
- Hypothermia *Heat Stress *Puncture Wound
Explain the different degrees of burns
1st degree - red skin, mild painful
2nd degree -red skin, blister, sever pain
3rd degree - charred skin or tissue, may/ may not be painful depending on nerve damage
Explain the rule of 9’s
Used to estimate percentage of body surface burned - head is 9% total
chest/ abdomen is 18% total (9% each side)
left/ right leg is 18% total (9% each side)
genitals is 1%
left/ right arm is 9% total (4.5% each side)
Each side means front side and back side*
What are some methods used to control bleeding?
- Direct pressure
- Pressure Points (22)
- Tourniquet (last resort)
Describe the basic treatment for a suicide gesture or attempt
Treat any self inflicted wounds appropriately
Keep patient from inflicting to themselves
Get them to a trained professional or stay with them until one arrives
Dislocations
When a bone is forcibly displaced from its joint. Swelling, bruising, numbness, sever pain, and or muscle spasms will occur. Do not attempt to place it back in unless you have too, this may result in nerve damage. Seek medical attention within 8 hours of dislocation
Sprains
Injury to the ligaments and soft tissues that support a joint
CPR stands for what?
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
What is the primary duty of a firefighter?
The primary duty of a firefighter is to save lives. The secondary responsibility is to extinguish fires
What are the 3 element of fire?
Heat
Oxygen
Fuel
What is the fire tetrahedron?
It is the chemical chain reaction that has to take place between elements for a fire to occur
What are the 4 classes of fires?
Class A- combustible materials
Class B- flammable liquids
Class C- electrical fires
Class D- combustible metals
What are some extinguishing agents for a Class A fire?
Extinguishing agents are H2O and AFFF
What does AFFF stand for?
Aqueous Film Forming Foam
