Basic Evolution Notes Flashcards
The process of biological change by which decedents come to differ from their ancestors.
Evolution
A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can reproduce fertile offspring.
Species
States that natural disasters such as floods and volcanic eruptions have shaped landforms and caused species.
George Cuvier- French zoologist Catastrophism
Changes that happened in landforms resulted from slow changes over a long period of time.
Gradualism (James Hutton- Scottish Geologist)
The geological processes that shape earth are uniform through time.
Charles Lyell- English Geologist Uniformitarianism
Studied the finches of the Galapagos island
Charles Darwin
The difference in physical traits of an individual from those of other individuals in the group to which it belongs.
Variation
Feature that allows an organism to better survive In its environment. (Can lead to genetic change in a population over time.)
Adaptation
Humans change species by breeding it for a certain traits
Artificial Selection
Mechanism by which individuals that have beneficial adaptations produce more offspring. (In nature, the environment is the selective agent)
Natural Selection
