Q

HOMEOSTASIS

A

Maintenance of the constant conditions in the body’s internal environment.
A balance to “right itself” from stressors

Q

COMPENSATION

A

A return to homeostasis after being challenged by a stressor.
Adaptation of healing through the use of control/compensatory mechanisms

Q

DECOMPENSATION

A

When the body is unable to meet the challenge of stressors, and the control mechanisms are “exhaused”. There is a failure to adapt and heal

Q

“SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS”

A

Signs - manifestations that can be objectively identified by a trained observer

Symptoms - subjective manifestations that can only be reported by the patient experiencing them

Q

LOCAL VS. SYSTEMIC

A

Local - in a small location or particular area, generally redness, swelling, rash

Systemic - generalized, all over the body. Such as fever, urticaria, malaise.

15
Q

ACUTE VS. CHRONIC

A

Acute - fairly rapid appearance of signs and symptoms of disease, usually lasts a short times. Will resolve in a few days

Chronic - develop more slowly, signs and symptoms are generally insidious and last longer. Include periods of remissions, and periods of exacerbations

16
Q

CENTRAL LOCATION

A

Refers to a problem, situation, or other that is occurring towards the center or “core” of the body

The more central an area or problem is, the more proximal it is to the core

17
Q

PERIPHERAL LOCATION

A

Refers to a problem, situation or other that is occurring towards the outer parts of the body

18
Q

PROGNOSIS

A

The predicted outcome of a disease based on certain factors: age, health history, presence of comorbidities

19
Q

SEQUELA

A

Aftermath of a disease

Often referred to as “complications.” Generally negative outcomes
