What are Barthe’s five narrative codes
enigma codes, action codes, symbolic code, referential codes and semantic codes
What is a symbolic code?
The deeper meaning or connotations of language, based on cultural association
What is a referential codes?
When a media product refers to something outside of the text. Closely related to intertetuality
What is a semantic code?
The literal meaning of a code, the denotation
What is an action code?
The narrative relating to something happening or progressing
What is an enigma code?
Mystery within a text that is not answered straight away, creating suspense
What is barthes theory of semiotics?
That every set of codes has connotations and relates to ‘myths’ around the world we live in. The producer makes paraadigamitic choices, encoding meaning behind a text.
