Barriers Flashcards
What is the physiological barrier to distribution?
Drugs are absorbed into the blood stream, the don’t have access to organs
There are barriers
What are the barriers in the body
Blood brain barrier (BBB)
Dynamic interface that separates the CNS from the vascular system
What is the role of the kidney?
Kidneys maintain the water and electrolytes balance in the body
What is the kidney barrier?
To maintain the kidneys its achieved by blood filtration followed by reabsorption and secretion
Selective process
The body discriminates between compounds
What is one of the important transporters and where is it found?
P-glycoproteins (P-gp) and its found in the brain
What is the role of P-gp?
Transfer drug compounds out of the body
What is the placental barrier and what is its role?
Barrier between mother and foetus
Ensures substances cannot simply transfer between
Describe the structure of the placental barrier
Vey porous (small holes) and allows many chemical substances to cross
