Q
What is the Metaplasia-Dysplasia-Carcinoma Sequence?
How is it monitored?
A
➊ In a small minority of patients with Barrett’s, the metaplastic (columnar) epithelium can progress to a dysplasia, and then an adenocarcinoma
N.B. Progression of Barrett’s into an Adenocarcinoma is NOT INEVITABLE
➋ Regular screening and biopsies to check for dysplasia
3
Q
How is it managed?
A
• PPI
• Ablation to allow for normal, healthy cells to form (only for those with some degree of dysplasia)
